Eduardo Fernandez is Of Counsel at Weiss Law, where he focuses on private client services for both domestic and international families and their closely held businesses. Mr. Fernandez is a seasoned tax attorney with extensive experience advising high-net-worth individuals—both U.S. and foreign—on U.S. federal income, gift, and estate tax matters related to cross-border investments, including U.S. real estate, as well as pre-immigration tax planning.
Mr. Fernandez’s practice includes the structuring and administration of complex international trust and corporate structures, and the implementation of cross-border reorganizations. He has significant experience with offshore and domestic trust arrangements (including life insurance trusts), international information reporting, and compliance with key U.S. tax regimes such as the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA), the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), voluntary disclosure programs, and U.S. withholding tax obligations.
Mr. Fernandez’s representative matters include pre-immigration tax planning for one of Latin America’s most prominent singer-songwriters now residing in Florida; the structuring of an $100 million single-family rental home fund for predominantly Chilean investors, including the negotiation of a $60 million credit facility; and the development of an investment strategy for a Brazilian family office’s $84 million student housing project in Florida. He also advised on a $100+ million investment in a renewable energy facility in California.
Mr. Fernandez holds a J.D. with advanced standing from Emory University School of Law, an LL.M. in Taxation from Northwestern University, an LL.M. in U.S. Law from Florida International University, and an LL.B. from Universidad de los Andes. He is admitted to practice law in the State of New York.
